Yale University’s Guild of Carillonneurs

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — In the middle of the Yale University campus is a historic building called Harkness Tower. Every day, Yale students, Carillonneurs, walk up about 170 steps to a room behind the clock to play a 54-bell carillon atop the tower.

It is not a recording. Most folks don’t know about this long time tradition, but now you do.

“There are about 600 carillons in the whole world. In Connecticut, we have 11, so the Yale carillon is the heaviest carillon we have in the state, there are also large concert carrillons at Trinity College in Hartford and Simsbury United Methodist Church in Simsbury and the Fish Chruch the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford those are the other large instruments as well as the First Congregational Church in West Hartford.”

By the way, if you have a favorite song, any song, from any era, you can request that it be played from the tower. All you have to do is go to their website.

The next time you are walking around in downtown New Haven at 12:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., listen for the bells.
