(WTNH)–With Veteran’s Day coming up on Friday, this edition of “Nyberg” goes back in time to tell the story of a group of American G.I.’s who brought Christmas to the tiny town of Wiltz, Luxembourg during the darkest days of World War II, right before the Battle of the Bulge.
Canton, Connecticut’s Peter Lion revives the true story of Richard Brookins, now 94, in his book, “The American St. Nick.”
Brookins and his men saw to it that the children got a little bit of Christmas that year despite what meagerness there was then under Nazi control.
A documentary was also released around the heart-warming story.
“Generations have heard this story, generations have known about the American St. Nicholas, and so they just want to meet this guy just to be able to say, ‘I knew him.'” Lion said. “It’s a marvellous thing to see, how much they care and how much they open their hearts to this soldier and all of the soldiers that were there that day.”
Lion found the actual footage of that December 5th day nearly 72 years ago. To this day, American Saint Nick remains a hero in that town.
