(WTNH)–On this edition of “Nyberg,” Ann and her guest discuss the history of the Farmington Canal, which runs all the way from New Haven to Northampton, Massachusetts. The authority on the canal’s history is a former doctor of pathology turned historian, Carl E. Walter.
Walter has been studying and lecturing on the canal for close to 30 years.
He’s fasinated about how it was built, and the reason for its existence, which was for trade and commerce. In 1835, the canal was four feet deep, about 100 miles long and was traveled by boats that were 75 feet long. Think of those boats as the precursor to the 18-wheeler that carries our products today.
