(WTNH) — On this edition of “Nyberg,” we sit down with a great read titled, A Home Called New England, and its author.
The new book chronicles the history of homes all the way back to the 1600’s.
The architect behind the book is Duo Dickinson. He’s been in practice for 40 years in Madison and has built all kinds of dwellings in the area.
Much of his work has been pro-bono over the years as he believes in helping nonprofits.
There are 300 images in this book and you’ll learn a lot which will cause you to do even more research on homes in New England.
“This is one of the oldest around, the stone house in Guilford from 1640 I think or 16-something and it’s essentially the greatest single stone home left from the 17th century,” Dickinson explained. “It’s not only a National Historic Site, it’s also a National Archaeological Site because they’re actually gone into it and figured out the deep background of who lived there and what they were doing. People should go see it, it’s a state park.”
“This is actually the oldest house in America from 1641…1637,” said Dickinson. “It’s the oldest timber frame house in America, and you can actually begin to see how they changed.”
“Here’s a great example of a villa,” Dickinson said of another home. “There are buildings just like in New Haven if you go on Hillhouse Avenue, you’ll see a million of them and that’s part of the picturesque movement. And you’ll see there’s Victorian and there’s sort of this Italianate thing. There’s a Mansford roof and you’ll see there’s a stick-style house.”
