(WTNH) — Are you an antique buff? Can you tell a real antique from a reproduction?
On tonight’s Nyberg, two experts on furniture from the Webb Dean Stevens Museum in Wethersfield, Helena Reilly and Bruce Henley.
They’re educating folks at the museum about how to tell vintage from a reproduction.
“What year is this table?” “I would say that’s probably late 18th century.” “Cost?” “Today, antiques are very affordable. This table has everything you want to see so this table could run $800 to $1200.” “And again, what year is it?” “Probably late 18th century.”
“Now the chair. Old or new? Let me ask you.” “Well see, hen you brought that in I thought, ‘oh my gosh,, you know, i’m going to say reproduction.” “You’re right.” “So I did learn something from my folks.”
“It does have some age. It was made by Wallace Nutting and it was probably made in the 1920’s.”
If you want to learn some of the basics on how to tell whether furniture is old or a reproduction, there are workshops that you can go to at Webb Deane Stevens Museum at Wethersfield.
Younger generations are not really into antiques these days. The upside there is that they’re much more affordable.
