(WTNH) — October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and one organization helping victims, both men and women, is Safe Futures CT in Southeastern, Connecticut.

It’s celebrating 40 years of helping others. They provide safe homes for adults and children; even pets. The organization helps thousands of people every year sort out their lives.

Executive Director Catherine Zeiner says 38 percent of the homeless in southeastern Connecticut are not in their homes because of domestic violence, a staggering statistic.

Safe Futures is saving lives for the people who contact them.

“We get a lot of calls from folks who don’t want to identify themselves, they’re ambivalent about whether or not they should leave. We never insist that they leave. We’re there to listen and to help them be safe, safe whether they want to leave or safe if they want to stay where they are or stay in that relationship for a period of time,” said Zeiner.

If you need guidance, there is a 24/7 hotline (888)774-2900. To find out more about the organization, click here.
