NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Three friends from Maine decided to become innovators and started designing a better flatware because they were sick of the metal taste they got when they ate food off of stainless.
The pooled their own money and came out with a tough, ceramic flatware. Their company is called Certine. The flatware is ergonomic, has a luster, doesn’t scratch or discolor and is dishwasher safe.
“Why couldn’t we have something and I didn’t know what that thing was. That’s why you need to have people because just because you have an idea doesn’t mean you can flush it out. What can we do to create a fork that doesn’t feel or taste like metal,” said William Todd, one of the co-founders.
They then had to decide on a look.
“What we wanted is something ergonomic, so something easy in the hand, a beautiful look, something that was elegant and so we all collaborated and came up with a bunch of ideas,” said Co-founder Rachel Rodrigues.
So what is Certine’s goal?
“Ideally we’d like to take over the table scape. Everything that you interact with with food that’s not made of ceramic currently, or rather metal, we’d like to be producing that. Serving spoons, serving dishes, gravy boats, you name it. We’d like to be producing a tough structural ceramic,” said Co-founder David Muise.
This was all self-funded. The three sell their gun-metal grey-colored flatware online, but are also busy rolling out their product to stores, which includes Chef’s Emporium in New Haven.
